It's
been long, like really very long since my last post. Mostly it's
because I was held up with a lot of life's misgivings and school, I
failed the narrative that women can multi task bu school is over now as I
am set
to graduate in December (yeeey). Is it funny to say that I feel like I
have not achieved
much? I mean, which doors is a Bachelors Degree really supposed to open
in a
country filled with corruption, tribalism and nepotism? Anyway enough of
that
social justice banter, lets dive straight in to our topic for today.
BALCONIES
A
recent tweet by Beatrice Marshall really got me
thinking, I mainly saw balconies as places to dry ones clothes if you
live in a
flat, a flat that has a balcony that is. I recently came to find out
that this is poor thinking, like literally
my thoughts ooze poverty (according to the KOT elite middle-class). I
walked around
yesterday I could not help but notice majority of people actually do
hang
laundry on their balconies, which is something I actually find normal. Some countries in Europe people actually hang clothes on the balconies

Honestly, most buildings
in the city are really squeezed and the landlords either did not care to set
aside spaces for drying out clothes while building or just built with the idea
that their tenants will find their own
way to dry their laundry. In this case we have to be a bit
realistic, we
are a country that's in the tropics, why would one want to use a dryer
to dry
laundry when there's the sun, which at times shines with so much
ferocity that we literally joke that Kenya is a few kilometers from it,
do also put in consideration the crazy electricity
bills one has to pay if the consider using a dryer, KPLC will milk one's
pocket dry I tell you. In my opinion laundry dryers should
be used mostly in cold countries that experience terrible cold seasons.
This brings to mind another thought, are our flats
architecturally designed for countries in the tropics or are they designed for
Western countries. Let us be a bit realistic even if one gets to purchase a
washing machine and a dryer, where will they place them, rarely do these
‘flats’ have laundry rooms, you just have to sort out yourself once you move
in. there is poor organization in most of this buildings that most Kenyans have
decided to call home. I speak for 'the poors' mostly, and the middle class, well
because they are one mistake away from being poor anyway. Most are really not spacious and one can see
that the landlord really squeezed the space so as to get more rooms to rent out
and make money.
So for now before I detail down how one should decorate his
or her balcony by putting flowers in a pot and a little chair to sit on so as
to enjoy the view, go forth and hang your laundry their if there no other place
to do so. If you have to place small tanks of water on our balcony because you live in a building with water
issues, go forth and do as you desire. However If your flat has a designated
hanging spot give a pat on the back to your landlord and get ready for a post
on how to make your balcony a sweet spot.
